HCMC – Brazil has announced the suspension of tilapia imports from Vietnam, effective from February 14, due to concerns over the TiLV virus.
The Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, and Food Supply will uphold this suspension until a conclusive assessment of the disease’s potential impact is reached.
In response to this development, VASEP has urged Vietnamese tilapia exporters to comply with Brazilian authorities’ directive by halting exports to Brazil. Exporters are advised to stay informed about updates and adhere to manufacturing and processing regulations for aqua-products destined for export markets.
VASEP clarified that Brazil is not a significant market for Vietnamese tilapia exports, thus the impact on local exporters is expected to be minimal. In 2023, the European Union (EU) was Vietnam’s largest tilapia buyer, with imports totaling US$2 million, followed by the U.S. with around US$1 million.
