HANOI – Can Tho City and An Giang Province have proposed the Ministry of Construction expand the Chau Doc-Can Tho-Soc Trang Expressway to six lanes, at a total estimated cost of nearly VND30 trillion (over US$1.1 billion).

The upgrade, if approved, would commence in early 2027 and conclude by the end of 2029.

Currently, part of the expressway spanning over 132km through the Mekong Delta city of Can Tho, features four limited lanes with intermittent emergency shoulders.

The proposal advocates for upgrading this to a full six-lane configuration, widening the roadbed to 32.25m and incorporating continuous emergency lanes. The preliminary investment for the component alone is estimated at nearly VND18.6 trillion, covering construction, project management, consulting and contingency costs.

The component is expected to be completed in the second quarter of 2026 to ensure synchronized execution with the main project.

Similarly, another part of the expressway stretching over 57km through An Giang Province, is also proposed for a full six-lane expansion. This involves adding 15.25m to the roadbed and surface on the left side of the route and widening all 32 bridges from 17.5m to 32.5m. The preliminary investment for this section is estimated at over VND11.2 trillion.

The entire Chau Doc-Can Tho-Soc Trang Expressway, a critical infrastructure project in the Mekong Delta, currently has a main route length of over 57 kilometers and an initial investment of VND13.53 trillion, featuring a four-lane, 17m roadbed design in its first phase. This expansion is crucial for completing the regional expressway network and enhancing transport capacity along a vital horizontal corridor.
