HCMC – A total of 19 flights to and from Dien Bien Airport in the northern province of Dien Bien have been canceled over the past three days due to low visibility.
According to the Vietnam Air Traffic Management Corporation, five flights were canceled at Dien Bien Airport on April 6, followed by six on April 7, and then eight on April 8.
Low visibility at the airport was attributed to smog generated by farmers burning fields and ongoing construction activities in recent days. Dust and smoke carried by the wind drift towards the basin of Dien Bien Phu, significantly reducing visibility and impeding flight operations.
Although the upgrade project for Dien Bien Airport was completed in 2023, enabling the operation of large aircraft and bolstering tourism in the region, the airport still relies on its old air traffic control tower due to delays in constructing a new one.
