Former deputy minister of Industry and Trade detained

HCMC – The police have detained Hoang Quoc Vuong, former deputy minister of Industry and Trade, for allegedly abusing his positions and powers while on duty.

With approval from the Supreme People’s Procuracy, the Investigative Police Agency under the Ministry of Public Security (MPS) arrested Vuong and searched his residence to collect evidence.

Vuong, 60, served as deputy minister of Industry and Trade in two separate terms, first from 2010 to 2012, and then from 2015 to 2020.

The arrest comes as the police are expanding a probe into violations at the Ministry of Industry and Trade and other agencies, Lieutenant General To An Xo, spokesperson of the MPS, said today, January 4.

In November 2023, the police arrested Nguyen Danh Son, director of the Electric Power Trading Company, a subsidiary of State-run utility Vietnam Electricity Group (EVN), for the same charge.

Also involved in this case are five other officials, including three at EVN and two at the Electricity Regulatory Authority of Vietnam (ERAV) under the Ministry of Industry and Trade, who faced similar charges.
