HCMC – HCMC will break ground on three key road projects to reduce traffic congestion around the Tan Son Nhat International Airport in the fourth quarter of this year.

These projects include building a road connecting Tran Quoc Hoan Street and Cong Hoa Street and expanding Hoang Hoa Tham and Cong Hoa streets, the local media reported.

The most important project is the four-kilometer-long road which will connect to the underway passenger terminal T3 project at the airport. The project is set to have six lanes and comprise two underpasses and an overpass in front of the terminal, with a total cost of nearly VND4.5 trillion.

The biggest challenge facing the project is that the remaining 15.5 hectares of military land has yet to be cleared. As such, HCMC has proposed the prime minister ask the Ministry of National Defence to hand over 11.9 hectares in advance to start work.

To speed up work on the project, the city will break ground on an underpass at the Phan Thuc Duyen-Tran Quoc Hoan intersection in November. The entire project is set to be completed in September 2024.

The second project is the expansion of Hoang Hoa Tham Street stretching from the gate of the military base near the airport to Cong Hoa Street, requiring some VND291 billion in investment.

Some 80% of affected households have agreed to receive compensation, while the Ministry of National Defence approved the handover of over 3,360 square meters of land for the project.

Site clearance and compensation processes will be completed in September so that the project can get off the ground in October.

In addition, the expansion of Cong Hoa Street will be executed from Alley No. 2 on Tran Quoc Hoan Street to Thang Long Street, with a total length of 134 meters. All households affected by the project, which needs VND168 billion, have agreed to receive compensation for site clearance. Work on the project will start in October and will be completed three months later.

Besides the three key projects, HCMC will  widen four streets, including Than Nhan Trung, Tan Ky Tan Quy, Truong Chinh and Tan Son, to ease traffic congestion around the airport.

At a meeting on July 9, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh urged the Ministry of Transport to complete all procedures to begin work on the passenger terminal T3 project at the Tan Son Nhat International Airport in HCMC in the third quarter of the year.

To connect traffic with terminal T3, the prime minister asked HCMC to promptly start work on key projects at a gateway to the airport.
