CAN THO – Vietnam’s Hung Nhon Group and Dutch livestock feed company De Heus are exploring opportunities to expand their agricultural investments in Can Tho City, following a working session with city authorities on April 20.
De Heus said it currently operates three feed mills in Can Tho’s Tra Noc I, Tra Noc II and Tan Phu Thanh industrial parks, producing aquaculture, livestock and poultry feed. The facilities supply around 500,000 tons annually to domestic and export markets, generating over US$200 million in revenue and employing about 500 local workers.
The company plans to upgrade and expand technology at its Tra Noc I plant. Building on existing projects, both firms are now surveying further investments in the city’s agriculture sector.
Hung Nhon chairman Vu Manh Hung said the partnership focuses on a value chain model, in which De Heus provides feed, breeding stock and nutrition solutions, while Hung Nhon organizes production. He said the model is designed to work with farmers rather than compete against them.
Beyond feed production, the two companies are considering deeper investment in food processing to complete the value chain, particularly in the Mekong Delta.
The partnership has already been implemented in Tay Ninh Province, the Southeast and the Central Highlands. In Tay Ninh, the firms are developing a grandparent breeding herd of 10,000 animals for 2026–2036, along with 8,000 breeder chickens and about 25 million broilers. The first exports to Halal markets are expected in early 2027.
Johan van den Ban, general director of De Heus Vietnam and Asia, described Can Tho as a strategic location. The companies aim to expand their integrated model into pangasius and shrimp farming in the city.
According to the Can Tho Department of Agriculture and Environment, the city has around 1,100 livestock farms and 90,000 farming households. It also has 35 VietGAP-certified facilities and 35 disease-safe farming zones.
Can Tho currently has four major livestock production and consumption chains. About 30 large-scale farms are engaged in contract farming with companies such as CP Vietnam, De Heus and Japfa Comfeed. The city’s total livestock and poultry population exceeds 16.8 million head.
