Indian Coast Guard ship arrives in HCMC for goodwill visit

HCMC—An Indian Coast Guard ship, led by Captain Sudhir Ravindran, arrived in HCMC today for a goodwill visit until April 5.

The Vietnam visit is aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation between India and Vietnam in maritime security and law enforcement.

The official reception at Saigon Port was attended by Rear Admiral Ngo Binh Minh, commander of Vietnam Coast Guard Region 3, along with representatives from various Vietnamese agencies.

The ship Samudra Paheredar has 124 crew members.

Members of the crew will have meetings with HCMC leaders, regional military commanders, Vietnam Coast Guard Region 3.

The visit aligns with the commitments outlined in a memorandum of understanding signed between India and Vietnam in 2015, aimed at enhancing cooperation in maritime security.

This is an opportunity for officers and personnel from the Indian and Vietnamese Coast Guards to share expertise, insights, and best practices in maritime law enforcement.

After visiting Vietnam, the ship will continue its journey to Manila of the Philippines, and Muara of Brunei, before returning to its home port in India.

The Samudra-class pollution control vessel is designed specifically to address oil spill incidents and tackle the security and environmental challenges facing India.

Measuring 95 meters in length with a displacement of 4,300 tons, the vessel can achieve a maximum speed of 20.5 knots and has an operational range of 6,500 nautical miles for up to 20 days at sea.

In addition to its role as a maritime law enforcement vessel, the Samudra Paheredar also undertakes tasks such as surveillance, defense, search and rescue operations, and medical evacuations.
