HCMC – Vietnam’s Party General Secretary and State President To Lam will pay a state visit to Sri Lanka on May 7-8 at the invitation of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, the Foreign Ministry said on Monday.
The trip will mark Lam’s first visit to Sri Lanka since taking office as the country’s top leader and comes as both nations seek to deepen economic and investment cooperation.
It follows Dissanayake’s trip to Vietnam in May last year, when he attended the United Nations Day of Vesak celebrations in HCMC and held talks with Vietnamese leaders on expanding bilateral ties.
Vietnam and Sri Lanka established diplomatic relations on July 21, 1970, and have since maintained a traditional friendship and broad based cooperation. In 2025, two-way trade reached roughly US$260 million, up 20% from 2024.
Sri Lanka currently has 34 active projects in Vietnam with total registered capital of US$43 million, ranking 64th among 154 countries and territories investing in Vietnam across seven out of 21 economic sectors, mainly in manufacturing and processing industries.
To Lam’s upcoming state visit to Sri Lanka is expected to mark a new milestone in bilateral ties, opening the door to breakthroughs in economic, trade and investment cooperation, while helping both countries better navigate rapidly shifting global political and economic conditions.
