Vietnam imports over 5.5 million tons of fuel, crude oil in early 2026

HCMC – Vietnam imported more than 5.5 million tons of petroleum products and crude oil worth nearly US$3.4 billion in the first 2.5 months of this year, showed Vietnam Customs data.

In the first half of March alone, the country spent nearly US$492 million importing over 533,000 tons of petroleum products, up more than 41% year-on-year. Import value during the period rose 89.2% compared to the same period last year.

From the beginning of the year to March 15, Vietnam imported nearly 2.71 million tons of petroleum products with a total value exceeding US$1.94 billion, up 42–43% in both volume and value year-on-year.

Diesel oil accounted for the largest share of fuel imports, valued at US$1.04 billion, or nearly 53.5% of the total. Other imports included gasoline at US$505 million, jet fuel at US$356 million, and heavy fuel oil at US$42 million.

In addition, domestic firms spent US$1.44 billion importing nearly 2.8 million tons of crude oil for refining as of March 15, down 7% in volume compared to the same period last year.

In the first two months of 2026, petroleum imports reached 2.18 million tons, up 43% year-on-year. Diesel oil imports totaled 1.26 million tons, rising 69.2% and accounting for 50% of total petroleum imports. Gasoline imports reached 462,000 tons, up 37.4% and making up 21%, while jet fuel imports were 375,000 tons, up 8.1% and accounting for 17.2%.

Crude oil imports in the same period totaled 2.16 million tons worth US$1.08 billion, down 10% in volume and 25% in value year-on-year. Kuwait remained the largest supplier, with 1.82 million tons, accounting for over 80% of total crude oil import value.

On the export side, Vietnam shipped 277,000 tons of crude oil in February, up 277% from the previous month. In the first two months, crude oil exports totaled 349,000 tons worth US$200 million, down 10% in volume and 16.7% in value year-on-year. Major export markets included Australia with 179,000 tons and ASEAN countries with 111,000 tons.
