HCMC – Vietnamese travelers are leading Asia in efforts to reduce carbon footprints in tourism, with 81% considering sustainability and responsibility important, according to a 2026 survey by Agoda.
The survey found that 43% of Vietnamese respondents expect sustainability to become more important over the next three years. Across Asia, 77% of travelers consider sustainability in travel planning, up from 68% a year earlier.
Vietnamese travelers recorded the highest level of awareness in minimizing environmental impact and carbon emissions generated from transport, accommodation and consumption during trips. Some 29% identified this as the main driver for choosing sustainable travel, compared to 23% in Taiwan, 16% in Thailand, 14% in South Korea and 13% in Japan.
The trend reflects growing concerns over plastic waste, marine ecosystem conservation and climate change, particularly in coastal destinations. Travelers are increasingly selective about transport and accommodation to limit environmental impact.
In addition to environmental considerations, 28% of Vietnamese respondents said sustainable tourism should ensure spending benefits local communities, while 45% highlighted local business development as the most significant impact of well-managed tourism.
The trend aligns with the development of community-based tourism in Vietnam. Five localities, including Tan Hoa (Quang Tri), Thai Hai (Thai Nguyen), Tra Que (Danang), Lo Lo Chai (Tuyen Quang), and Quynh Son (Lang Son), have been recognized as Best Tourism Villages by the United Nations World Tourism Organization.
Vietnam also leads the region in demand for certified sustainable accommodation, with 43% of travelers expressing interest in more green lodging options, prompting businesses to adopt international standards and environmental certifications.
