HCMC – Chi Thanh railway tunnel on the North-South line was reopened at noon today, May 31, following a 10-day interruption caused by a landslide.
The Vietnam Railway Corporation reported that over 400 cubic meters of rocks and soil in the landslide had blocked the cross-country railway at the Chi Thanh tunnel. The railway sector arranged the transfer of 36,000 passengers on 128 trains between Tuy Hoa and La Hai stations to ensure travel schedules were maintained.
Following the resumption of railway service, construction units will continue to inspect and repair the tunnel until it meets safety requirements. This will enable an increase in the operating speed of trains from the current 5 to 15 kph.
The entire North-South rail line has 12 deteriorating railway tunnels that need to be repaired. The Chi Thanh tunnel is one of 11 tunnels included in the national railway tunnel upgrade project, which is being implemented by the Ministry of Transport at a total cost of VND7,000 billion.
