HCMC – Vietnam Power Development JSC (VNPD) is preparing to invest in a 150MW biomass power plant in Vinh Trinh Commune, Can Tho City, which will use rice straw and husk as fuel.

The project aims to cut over 560,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually and promote green economic growth in the Mekong Delta.

According to the company’s survey, the biomass power plant will cover more than 24 hectares of land and 0.5 hectare of water surface. The project is included in the national power development plan and aligns with Can Tho’s development strategy for 2021–2030.

The plant will apply advanced circulating fluidized bed (CFB) boiler technology, which allows for the combustion of multiple biomass fuels while meeting current environmental standards. It is expected to consume around 700,000 tons of biomass each year, sourced mainly from rice husks and straw collected within a 30-kilometer radius. The combustion process is designed to minimize pollution, as ash residues can be reused for construction materials or organic fertilizers.

With an estimated investment of over VND8 trillion, the facility will create jobs for about 200 direct employees and thousands of indirect workers involved in fuel collection, transportation, and related services. The project is also expected to stimulate the local economy while helping Can Tho meet its Net Zero target by 2050.

Currently, the Department of Industry and Trade is guiding VNPD to finalize investment procedures. Meanwhile, the departments of Agriculture, Environment, and Finance are coordinating with VNPD to complete the land use plan for submission to the city’s People’s Committee within November.
