HCMC – Authorities in the central province of Lam Dong and Sun Group on April 27 broke ground on the civil aviation component of the Phan Thiet Airport project.
With total investment of nearly VND3.9 trillion, the project is a key infrastructure development for Lam Dong and the first civil airport in Vietnam to be fully funded by private capital.
The airport is planned to meet ICAO 4E standards, with a designed capacity of two million passengers per year by 2030. Spanning more than 74 hectares in a coastal area, the project will include a passenger terminal, aircraft apron and air traffic control tower.
Notably, the airport will operate under a dual-use model, sharing its runway system with military infrastructure to optimize both national defense and economic development, particularly in the province’s marine economy.
A representative of Sun Group said the company will mobilize maximum resources to bring the project into operation by 2027.
The development of a large-scale airport in Phan Thiet is expected to help Lam Dong complete its “sea–forest” tourism ecosystem, strengthening connectivity between the Central Highlands and coastal regions. Lam Dong was also advised to accelerate urban planning and develop functional zones around the airport to fully unlock its economic potential following the administrative merger, creating momentum for regional growth.
