HCMC – A 12th grader in Quang Tri Province’s Trieu Phong District died yesterday, December 9, seven days after receiving emergency treatment for her post-Covid vaccination reaction, according to the provincial anti-Covid authority.
The 17-year-old student of Nguyen Huu Thuan High School received her first shot of the Pfizer vaccine last week at the Trieu Phong Medical Center. This batch of the vaccine will expire in February next year, reported VnExpress.
While undergoing a Covid pre-vaccination health assessment, she said she had a history of allergy to vaccines. Her family wanted her to be vaccinated against Covid and signed a pledge to get her inoculated. Some 25 minutes after being vaccinated, she developed symptoms of hives and dizziness, and showed signs of anaphylaxis, said a representative of the Trieu Phong Medical Center.
Medical workers at the center immediately handled the case in line with the health authority’s guidelines for the management of anaphylaxis. As her condition did not improve after 15 minutes, she was transferred to the Quang Tri Province General Hospital for emergency treatment. On the way to the hospital, she showed symptoms of cardiac arrest and respiratory arrest.
During intensive treatment at the hospital, she had blood clotting disorder and was given blood donated by the local medical workers and residents. She died on the seventh day of treatment.
Following the vaccination incident, the provincial Department of Health has chaired a meeting to assess the cause of her death.
Earlier, on December 7, another high school student in the northern province of Son La died three days after being hospitalized for his post-vaccination reaction.
