HCMC – The Government has targeted to develop and upgrade 830 kilometers of expressways in the Mekong Delta region by 2030.
Besides, the region will have a total 4,000 kilometers of national highways in 2030, the local media reported.
Under a regional master plan for the 2021-2030 period, with a vision toward 2050, approved by the prime minister on March 4, a multimodal transportation system will be developed in the region to promote local and international connectivity.
Apart from the investment in expressways, the region will be home to four airports, 13 seaports, 11 inland waterway terminals for passengers and 13 others for cargo.
The Mekong Delta region is set to become a sustainable and dynamic agricultural economic hub of the country, the region and the world by 2030. Agriculture centers, economic corridors and urban areas with diverse services and industries will be developed.
The Mekong Delta region is expected to obtain a gross regional domestic product growth of 6.5% per year, 2-2.5 times higher than that in 2021, with the agro-forestry-fishery sector contributing 20% to the overall economic growth and industry-construction and service contributing 32% and 46%, respectively.
According to the master plan, the Mekong Delta region will not develop new coal-fired thermal power plants after 2030, while focusing on investment in wind and solar power plant projects.
Can Tho City and Phu Quoc off Kien Giang Province in the region are set to become regional and international tourism centers.
