HCMC – The Ministry of Transport has authorized the Cai Mep International Terminal in Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province to accommodate super container vessels with a reduced load carrying capacity of up to 200,000 tons, following successful trial operations that began in 2020.

Under the new regulations, container ships weighing up to 214,121 DWT (deadweight tonnage) can now access the terminal, provided they meet specific conditions related to maritime traffic flow, operational standards, and other crucial factors.

The Vietnam Maritime Administration will oversee the approval of these operations, ensuring adherence to maritime safety, infrastructure security, fire safety measures, and environmental pollution controls.

Operated by Cai Mep International Terminal Co., Ltd, the facility is strategically located in the Cai Mep estuary area within the Ba Ria-Vung Tau seaport. The terminal spans 48 hectares and features a 600-meter berth and a minimum draft of 16.5 meters, with a handling capacity exceeding 1.1 million TEUs.

This development marks a significant milestone for the terminal, which had previously been granted permission for trial runs to receive container ships with a capacity of up to 214,121 DWT in 2020.
