During a seminar on improving value chains of exported farm produce and boosting their integration with the logistics system on June 23, major exporters, especially those in the agricultural sector, expressed concerns over high logistics expenses. In reality, transportation fees from Thailand to international markets, ranging from US$1,000 to US$1,200 per ton, are significantly lower than those in Vietnam. This significant cost disparity hampers the competitiveness of Vietnamese products, which are often perceived as lower in terms of design, quality, and brand promotion. It is worth noting that this issue was already raised six years ago. In 2017, statistics from the Vietnam Logistics Business Association showed that logistics costs for agriculture in Vietnam were 6% higher than in Thailand, 12% higher than in Malaysia, and a staggering 300% higher than in Singapore. According to a report published by global logistics provider Agility in 2022, logistics costs in Vietnam accounted for approximately 20% of GDP, double the figures observed in developed countries.
