HCMC – Truc Nhi and Dieu Nhi, the twin girls conjoined at the lower abdomen and pelvic areas, were separated successfully yesterday evening, July 15, after nearly 12 hours of operation.
By 6:40 p.m in the day, the Siamese twins were moved out of an operating theater of the HCMC Children’s Hospital, where the operation was performed, and were safely transferred to the intensive care unit for post-surgery observations and care.
Dr. Truong Cong Dinh, director of the hospital, said that the 12-hour separation surgery joined by a team of nearly 100 leading healthcare experts and workers in the city had ended successfully.
On June 7 last year, the baby girls were delivered via a cesarean operation at the HCMC-based Hung Vuong Hospital. They were then brought to the HCMC Children’s Hospital and had received medical observation and special treatment there for a year to prepare for this separation surgery.
As the twins were now 13 months old and 15 kilograms in weight combined, with their development indicators nearly equal to those of normal babies, the doctors decided to perform this surgery.
