HCMC – The Hanoi City People’s Committee on the morning of October 9 broke ground on the Nam Thang Long–Tran Hung Dao section of Metro Line No. 2, a major national infrastructure project worth VND35 trillion.
According to Nguyen Cao Minh, head of the Hanoi Metropolitan Railway Management Board (MRB), the project is financed by official development assistance (ODA) from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and counterpart funds from the city’s budget, the Vietnam News Agency reported.
The 11-kilometer route includes 1.94 kilometers of elevated track and over nine kilometers of underground track running through Hoan Kiem Lake and the landmark Old Quarter. It will feature 10 stations, stretching from Xuan Dinh to Tran Hung Dao, with Station C10 designed to connect with Metro Line No. 3.
The 11.3-hectare Xuan Dinh depot will be developed under a transit-oriented development (TOD) model, integrating maintenance facilities, operations training, and mixed-use urban spaces aimed at sustainable and smart city growth.
Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony, Duong Duc Tuan, vice chairman of the Hanoi People’s Committee, said the Xuan Dinh depot would be Vietnam’s first TOD model, combining transport, commercial, service, and residential functions.
The underground C9 station will link to the area east of Hoan Kiem Lake, forming an underground transport hub that also serves as a public space and heritage preservation zone, contributing to the capital’s architectural landscape.
Tuan added that Hanoi plans to develop 15 metro lines totaling 619 kilometers to build a modern, high-capacity, and environmentally friendly public transport network.
