HCMC – Work will start on Ben Thanh-Thu Thiem and Thu Thiem-Long Thanh metro lines in the second quarter of this year, aiming to establish a seamless transit axis between downtown HCMC and the future Long Thanh International Airport in neighboring Dong Nai Province by 2030.

According to the HCMC Department of Construction, these projects are part of a strategic urban railway network designed to bolster regional connectivity. The Ben Thanh-Thu Thiem line is slated to begin construction in April, followed by the Thu Thiem-Long Thanh line in June, creating a modern transport corridor that marks a major breakthrough for the southern economic hub.

The 5.58-kilometer Ben Thanh-Thu Thiem section, which will run underground with six stations, will require an estimated VND33,000 billion. The city has appointed Truong Hai Group (Thaco) to prepare the feasibility study under a public-private partnership (PPP) with a build-transfer (BT) contract for Metro Line 2. This segment is a critical link in the overall Metro Line 2 project, which also includes the Ben Thanh-Tham Luong section that was already under construction since January 2026, and the future extension to Cu Chi area.

The Thu Thiem-Long Thanh line has been reclassified as an urban railway project under the authority of the HCMC People’s Committee. This 42-kilometer route, featuring 20 stations and a total investment of VND84,753 billion, is designed for speeds of up to 120 km/h. Thaco is also the proposed investor for this line. Once integrated with Metro Line 2, this network will directly link Vietnam’s two big airports in the southern region.

Furthermore, the city is prioritizing Metro Line 6 (Tan Son Nhat-Phu Huu) and the extension of Metro Line 1 (Ben Thanh-Suoi Tien) into Dong Nai Province. The Metro Line 1 extension, spanning 41.4 kilometers with a projected cost of VND60,261 billion, has been included in the National Assembly’s special mechanism for urban railway development.
