HCMC – Vietnam’s aviation authority has sought approval for a nearly-VND20-trillion master plan for the Buon Ma Thuot Airport in the 2021-2030 period, with a vision to 2050.

Under the master plan, Buon Ma Thuot Airport, located in Tan Lap Ward in Dak Lak Province, will continue serving both civil and military purposes.

During the 2021-2030 period, the airport is planned to handle around three million passengers and 10,000 tons of cargo annually, with capacity to accommodate Airbus A320, A321 and equivalent or smaller aircraft.

Passenger terminal T1 will be expanded to handle around three million passengers annually, while the existing runway will also be upgraded along with the addition of new taxiways.

By 2050, Buon Ma Thuot Airport is expected to raise capacity to around seven million passengers and 15,000 tons of cargo per year.

The plan also includes construction of a second runway measuring 2,400 meters by 45 meters, to be built about 275 meters north of the existing runway once demand rises.

Aircraft parking areas will also be expanded to provide at least 27 parking slots for Airbus A320, A321, Boeing 737 and equivalent aircraft.

A new T2 passenger terminal is planned with an annual capacity of four million passengers, while terminal T1 will continue operating at three million passengers per year.

The Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam estimated total investment for the project at over VND19.97 trillion, including around VND8.47 trillion for the 2021-2030 phase and VND11.45 trillion for the period through 2050.

The authority also proposed that Dak Lak Province incorporate the airport expansion plan into local land use planning and develop public transport connections to the airport.
