HCMC – Vietnamese air carriers will have extra flights on domestic routes to accommodate the strong travel demand during the upcoming April 30-May 1 holiday, according to the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam (CAAV).
CAAV has requested domestic airlines to add flights on busy routes, especially those connecting Hanoi, HCMC, and popular tourist destinations such as Danang, Phu Quoc, Tuy Hoa, Binh Dinh, and Cam Ranh, particularly on April 27, 28, and May 1 to 3.
Vietnam Airlines, the national carrier, is slated to operate 30-40 more flights per day, while low-cost carrier VietJet Air plans to have an extra 80 flights per day during the Reunification Day (April 30) and International Labor Day (May 1) holiday period.
As of April 8, domestic airlines had made available 100,000 to 110,000 seats per day on domestic flights for the holiday period, a 20% increase versus the average number in March.
Occupancy on domestic flights between Hanoi, HCMC, and local airports, as well as vice versa, ranges from 40% to 60%.
The Organization Commission of the Party Central Committee has thrown its support behind a Ministry of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs proposal for an uninterrupted five-day break during the Reunification Day (April 30) and International Labor Day (May 1) holiday.
Since Reunification Day this year falls on Tuesday and International Labor Day on Wednesday, the Ministry of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs wants one more day off on Monday so that workers can have five straight days off during the holiday, from April 27 to May 1.
If the proposal is approved, it would lead to an upsurge in travel.
