CAN THO – The Saigon Times Group collaborated with the Women’s Union of the Mekong Delta province of Ben Tre to give relief to 225 disadvantaged people in An Phuoc Commune, Chau Thanh District, on May 24.

The event was part of the “Saigon Times – Noi Vong Tay Lon” program, which aims to help people affected by the Covid-19 pandemic and saltwater intrusion. Each gift set contained VND300,000 in cash, 3 kilograms of rice and other necessities worth VND200,000.

Nguyen Thi Yen, 62, said her husband had passed away, leaving her to raise their disabled son alone. She has been out of work due to the pandemic for several months and lives on support from her neighbors. “I’m very happy to receive the package,” she noted on receiving the gifts from Pham Thi Phuong Thao, chairwoman of the Women’s Union of Ben Tre.

“It’s our honor to join the program. Many thanks to our generous donors and the Saigon Times Group for organizing this meaningful event. We expect more support for other charitable programs run by the Ben Tre Women’s Union such as, loving meals and zero-dong groceries, so that more disadvantaged people can be helped,” Thao remarked.

With the motto “No one is left behind – Ben Tre women contribute to fighting Covid-19 and saltwater intrusion,” the union has carried out many charitable programs, through which it has donated 20 water purifying machines, over 50,000 face masks, 10,000 hand sanitizer bottles, 10,000 gift sets, 60 tons of rice and many other necessities to poor people in the province.

Addressing the handover ceremony, Tran Minh Hung, editor-in-chief of the Saigon Times Group, said that since early April, the group has called on businesses, organizations and individuals to join the Saigon Times – Noi Vong Tay Lon program. “Although the gifts are not of very high value, they are a token of our sentiments, as journalists, for disadvantaged people, with the hope that they can overcome this difficult time,” he stated.
